Package Delivery Scam Warning In Northampton Twp.

Northampton Twp. Police said text messages are being sent out telling residents their packages are delayed.

NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —The Northampton Township Police Department is warning residents about a text message scam involving packages.

Northampton Police said the recent fraud involves people receiving a text message from UPS, USPS, Amazon, or another mail carrier saying that their package has been delayed.

Police said it is one of the many common frauds going around right now.

Police are asking residents not to click the link and to delete the message.

"Once the link is clicked, a message will appear asking you to call a number. When you call the number, a scammer will attempt to convince you to send them gift cards or money so they can 'release' the package," police said.

Police are also reminding residents not to pay anyone in gift cards.

"If someone is asking for gift cards as payment, it is almost always a scam," police said.

Police posted one example of the scam that residents should be on the lookout for, but stated that there are several ways that the messages are distributed.
