The frozen treat chain says it has temporarily replaced its custard with soft-serve ice cream due to a national egg shortage from avian flu.

“We are not able to get our egg supplies anymore to supply our 600 stores,” Rita’s spokeswoman Ariel Vegotsky told PennLive.com.

“We are temporarily transitioning from Frozen Custard to a Premium Soft-Serve Ice Cream because of a nationwide egg shortage. We hope to have it back soon, but until then please ask your local store for a sample of our new product,” a Rita’s representative wrote on Facebook.
