Whiz Kid of the Week: Ethan Clearfield

Each week Northampton Patch will showcase a local child for his/her recent accomplishment. If your son or daughter has done something extraordinary, let us know and he/she might be the next Whiz Kid!

Northampton Patch's Whiz Kid of the Week is Ethan Clearfield!

  • Age: 13
  • Hometown: Richboro, Pa
  • School: Richboro Middle School
  • Whiz Kid Accomplishment: Ethan raised $1,000 last year to donate to Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR) from baking and selling homemade dog treats.
  • Key to Awesomeness: A few years ago, Ethan watched an Oprah show about puppy mills that featured MLAR founder Bill Smith and fell in love with the cause. He did some research and found out Smith's shelter is located in Chester Springs, about an hour away, but he was too young to volunteer. That roadblock didn't stop Ethan, who figured out another way to contribute. After a suggestion from his mom, he combined a passion for baking with his desire to help rescued animals and developed the fundraising business "Biscuit Baker-E."

In his first year of selling the treats, Ethan made $500. The next year he set up a booth at Northampton Days and doubled the previous year's amount from selling more than 2,000 biscuits. He has also sold them at craft fairs and dedicated his Bar Mitzvah in September to raising more money for the cause. He has entered into a contest with the Freekibble Foundation to win $250 to help a local shelter, and with that money he hopes to donate $2,000 to MLAR this year.

Though Ethan said he's still a kid, he hopes to make a difference in these animals' lives.

"I feel very strongly about adopting animals from shelters and rescues and want to do whatever I can to help these animals who don't have a voice," he wrote in his submission to Freekibble.

The treats come in five flavors: chicken, barbeque, peanut butter, cheese and carob chip/peanut butter and three sizes. Ethan is now taking orders and is working toward building his own website to sell the treats. You can contact him at biscuitbakerE@gmail.com or (215) 355-2955.
