Getting to Know Cut Flowers - Asian Lily

There is definitely a difference among the many types of  lilies.  Some lilies are large and scented, while Asian lilies are smaller, lack fragrance, and are most familiar in whites, reds, oranges, and yellows.  However, they also do come in light pinks.  They are also much less expensive than the larger Oriental or Hybrid lilies so I use them a lot in my wedding work.   Lilies are available all year and have a vase life of about 4 days. If you bring home a bunch, all of the buds on the stems should eventually open - so save them!

I'm often asked about the anthers of lilies.  First of all, I pull them off.  The anthers are part of the reproduction system of a lily and if you're working with cut flowers, you have no use for that.  So if you take them off, the lily bloom  will "concentrate" more on opening and actually live longer.  I also always take them off because the "dust" stains.  I suggest using a tissue to pull them off so your fingers won't get stained.  If there is some dust left on a petal, use a small paintbrush to brush it away. If you do happen to get some on a piece of clothing, it will help the stain come out if you can let it sit in direct sunlight for a while before you wash it.

Any questions about Asian lilies?
