Things to do when you get Frustrated

Frustration is something that everybody experiences. Sometimes when we’re frustrated, we act in ways we normally wouldn’t; we throw tantrums, get angry, and become overwhelmed by the amount of stimulation our mind is receiving through all of this.  As the summer arrives and the days get hotter, you may find yourself becoming more easily frustrated. No need to worry! This article will help cool you down and give you some easy tips on how to meet your frustration and make a new choice.

1. Learn to recognize your frustration. The first step to take in this matter is to become aware of the moments in which you are frustrated. Without a general awareness of the emotion, you will not be able to grow and make a new choice. When you recognize frustration, notice what is taking place in your body- specifically areas that feel tight or constricted, and where you feel the breath moving in your body. Be sure to also notice the places in mind and body that feel comfortable and are willing to help you transform your frustration.

2. Conscious breathing. Once you have gone through the “check-in” of step 1, give yourself the moment to breathe in and out, letting the mind and body participate together in each breath. Do not attempt to change the breath, just let it be. In this one small action, you are already transforming your frustration because the practice of giving yourself the moment to simply breathe and be as you are is an act of patience and compassion (which remedy frustration).

3. After steps 1 and 2 are complete, you probably will begin to feel better already. You are now in a place where you can make a new choice! Here are some options for you. Feel free to try one or a combination of all.

                1. Count to 10 and return to the situation. Pretend as if you are meeting the situation for the first time. As you would a person, you would be calm, courteous, and respectable.

                2. Go to a private space where you can practice some Yoga postures or breathing exercises. Some great postures to try would be some standing postures like Warrior II, backbends like Camel Pose, forward bends like head-to-knee, and Child’s pose.

                4. Listen to a beautiful piece of music

                5. Take a walk in nature with or without music and enjoy the scenery.

                3. Take responsibility for your actions, even if that includes apologizing to whoever suffered as a result of your words or actions.

Remember not to get more frustrated if dealing with your frustration does not seem to be working. Instead, take a breath and remain friendly and gentle in this practice. Frustration is merely a reminder to find peace, patience, and compassion once more. Soon, your frustration will have transformed into compassion, patience, and joy! Love and Blessings!
