Woman Treated for Injuries After Being Struck by Car

DUI, speed not factors in crash, police said.

A 20-year-old New Jersey woman was taken to Reading Trauma Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries she suffered when a car struck her Thursday evening in Collegeville, according to reports.

Officer John Barnshaw arrived at the intersection of East Main and Sixth streets, in front of , and saw the woman on the ground, bleeding from the left side of her head. Another person at the scene was tending to her. The driver, 74-year-old Walter Staret Sr. of Collegeville, was also still at the scene.

Barnshaw reported that he took over administering to the victim until EMS arrived on the scene. The woman reported that her right knee hurt and she felt lightheaded, according to police. Also, “she was unclear of what had just happened to her. All she could remember was that she parked her vehicle on Sixth Avenue and started to cross Main Street,” according to the report.

When questioned by police, Staret said he was traveling west on East Main Street, and his speed was between 25-30 mph, the report states. “Staret stated that he saw a group of people on the right side of the roadway waiting to cross Main Street. He stated that as he started to go past them is when he struck the female,” according to police.

Witnesses told Barnshaw they saw the woman crossing the street, within in the crosswalk at the intersection. They saw her “stop and hesitate,” before breaking into a run, the report states. The car hit her when she was running, according to witnesses. The impact dented the car’s hood on the passenger side, police said. One of the witness reported seeing the woman slide off the hood and crawl to the sidewalk, where she stayed.

 It is undetermined if Staret will receive a traffic citation. However, police said he was neither speeding nor intoxicated; no criminal charges are pending.
