3rd Dog Killed By Philly Police Since May 2

Police said the officer shot and killed a pit bull that was attacking a smaller dog Wednesday. The smaller dog later died.

PHILADELPHIA — Another dog has been shot and killed by a Philadelphia Police officer, marking the third such instance in about two weeks' time.

The incident occurred at about 12:06 p.m. Wednesday on the 3000 block of North 16th Street.

Officers from the 39th District responded to a call about a dog attack at that time and location and found a large pit bull attacking a smaller dog.

One of the officers fired his gun several times, striking and killing the pit bull.

Police said one of the dog owners, a 66-year-old man, was hurt when a bullet fragment ricocheted and struck his left forearm. He declined medical attention at the scene.

The smaller dog died from injuries sustained in the attack, police said.

The officer who fired the rounds is a 30-year-old, 7-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, and is assigned to the 39th Police District. He has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the Internal Affairs and Officer-Involved Shooting Investigations.

On Tuesday, an officer shot and killed a pit bull that was attacking a woman on the 1500 block of South 58th Street.

And on May 2, an officer shot and killed a Cane Corso dog that was part of a group of dogs attacking a man at the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Union Street.
