1. UPMC Children's Hospital Physician Stabbed To Death (patch.com) — Residents across the Pittsburgh area are reeling after Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and a University of Pittsburgh professor, was fatally stabbed in his Edgewood home and his wife critically injured. Allegheny County Police say a suspect is in custody, while UPMC and Pitt are mourning the loss of a highly regarded caregiver and colleague.
   

2. Penguins Player's Father Killed In Bear Attack (patch.com) — Pittsburgh hockey fans are learning that Penguins forward Andrei Kuzmenko's father has died after a bear attack during a fishing trip in remote Siberia. The Penguins organization expressed deep condolences and support as Kuzmenko practiced with teammates in Pittsburgh before returning to Russia to be with his family.
   

3. Pittsburgh-Area School Cited By State For Food Safety Violations (patch.com) — Families in the Pittsburgh region should know that Aliquippa Junior-Senior High School in Beaver County was cited by the state for multiple food safety violations, including dangerously warm storage temperatures for cheese and vegetables. Inspectors ordered the school to discard affected food, take a cooler out of service, remove noncompliant shelving, and repair or replace all three coolers on the service line to protect students' health.
   

4. Sarris Candies Opens Ice Cream Shop In Pittsburgh (patch.com) — Pittsburgh ice cream lovers now have a new spot to visit as Sarris Candies opens its Sarris Scoop Shop inside the Giant Eagle Market District on Penn Avenue in the East End. The quick-service stand serves cones, sundaes, milkshakes, and grab-and-go treats from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, marking the company's first ice cream location within city limits.
   

5. New director of Pittsburgh housing authority approved unanimously amid ethics probe (wtae.com) — Pittsburgh's housing authority has a new director, Ivory Mathews, unanimously approved by the board even as an Oregon ethics investigation into her past travel expenses continues. Local leaders praise her decades of housing experience and say travel will remain part of the job, but stress internal controls and budgets will guide any future trips. Residents can expect her to start leading the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh this fall.
