PITTSBURGH, PA — Cities such as Pittsburgh, New York and Washington D.C. will see a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms for much of this summer, according to the seasonal forecast released Wednesday by State College-based AccuWeather.

Damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes will be possible with the most vigorous storms.

"Severe weather can be quite active across the north-central Plains, Midwest, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes and into the Northeast, especially in June and July," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.

AccuWeather expects northeastern states to experience a wet and stormy start to the summer before giving way to drier conditions in August. The hotter and drier conclusion to the season could prompt drought conditions in the mid-Atlantic states that could last into the beginning of autumn.

As for heat, AccuWeather predicts a historical average of above-90 temperatures for many eastern and mid-Atlantic cities. Pittsburgh averages nine 90-degree days a year, although there have been historical spikes of summer heat; in 1988, temperatures were 90 or hotter an unbelievable 38 days.
