Slain Pgh. Girl's Mom Faces Trial In Prior Shooting Case

Kaari Thompson, 4, was shot to death last week. Her critically wounded mother is scheduled for trial on attempted homicide charges.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The mother of the 4-year-old girl shot to death last week outside of a Lincoln-Lemington grocery is scheduled to go to trial next month on numerous charges related to a shooting incident in August.

The girl, Kaari Thompson, and the mother, Temani Lewis, both were shot Thursday outside of the Brooklyn Food Market in the city's Lincoln-Lemington section. Kaari died a short time later at Children's Hospital; Lewis remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Police have provided little information on a possible motive for the shooting or say if there are any suspects.

Lewis, 21, was arrested in August in connection with the non-fatal shooting of two 18-year-old women in the 7400 block of Stranahan Street in Homewood on Aug. 4, according to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Public Safety.

According to court documents, Lewis was charged with two counts of attempted homicide, four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person and two counts of carrying a firearm without a license.

Lewis was out on bail at the time of last week's shooting.

Lewis' non-jury trial is still slated to begin Jan. 26 before Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge Kevin Sasinoski, according to court documents.

News of the trial first was reported by WTAE-TV.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page to pay for Kaari's funeral expenses had attracted $15,000 in donations as of Tuesday afternoon.
