Station Square Getting Massive $30 Million Makeover

Station Square's Freight House Shops won't look the same when the project is completed.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Station Square is about to undergo one of the most significant transformations in its four-decade history. The South Side restaurant, retail and office complex is about to undergo $30 million that essentially will remake the Freight House Shops, the destination’s centerpiece.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Station Square’s owner, Forest City Realty Trust, will detail the changes at a meeting Thursday in the Grand Concourse restaurant. Here’s what you can expect in the coming months:

  • The Bradford School, a primary tenant in the Freight House Shops for years, will close in December.
  • UPMC will take over about a third of the Freight House Shops space next year on the Smithfield Street Bridge side of the building.
  • The Freight House Shops’ mezzanine level and food court are being eliminated.
  • The Melting Pot restaurant will move to the former comedy club space in Bessemer Court.
  • Five to seven new restaurants will be added.

The changes will coincide with another major Station Square development: a 319-unit apartment complex on the site of the former restaurant row in the old warehouse space.
