Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:

1) A proposed Strip District development project could bring as many as 288 apartments and dozens of townhouses to the area. The project, named the Brickworks Residential Development, would include eight buildings on a 3.45-acre lot at 2121 Smallman St., according to plans presented Tuesday to the city's Planning Commission. The plans call for two, six-story apartment buildings with 114 rental units each and 60 townhouses. The residential buildings would be built on a site near The Terminal that is now used as a parking lot with space for about 400 cars.

2) Mayor Ed Gainey reported yesterday that several of Pittsburgh's city departments will be partnering with startup companies in an effort to improve how city government functions and support the participating companies. "Piloting new ideas within city government is a win, win, win," said Alaa Mohamed, the city's senior civic engagement specialist. "It's a win for residents, for innovators and for city government." The PGH Lab, now launching its eighth cohort, is a six-month program that provides participating businesses with the opportunity to pilot products and services with city government. The initiative allows startups to gain feedback, network with other experts and learn how to work with government.

3) An unresponsive man was rushed to the hospital after he was found by emergency crews next to a burning car in Brookline. Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Whited Street around 3:40 a.m. for a reported vehicle fire. Pittsburgh police said there was no immediate evidence of a crash. It's unknown at this time whether the driver experienced a medical emergency, or if there was a vehicle issue that caused the fire. The Fire Investigation Unit is investigating.

4) Pittsburgh folks who love the fluffy, white cold flakes that fall from the sky might be wondering—when will we see more? The National Weather Service says none is coming in the immediate future. There will be a chance of light snow this weekend, but the next several weeks are trending toward above normal temperatures. That doesn't mean tropical temperatures are on the way. The average high in January is 37, while the average low is 21, according to the U.S. Climate Data website. But it does mean that most precipitation that falls within the next two weeks likely will be in the form of rain. At least for the moment, keep your snow shovel and ice melt in the garage.

5) A new restaurant option is coming to the Liberty Avenue food scene in Bloomfield. Fet-Fisk, a self-described "multi-faceted food project" that hosts pop-up dinners and more around the city, announced that it will move into a new space. The eatery signed a lease to open a "full-service restaurant" in what was formerly Lombardozzi's, an Italian spot that operated for nearly 50 years in Bloomfield before closing in 2021. The location will provide a permanent home for Fet-Fisk, a venture originally created by Sarah LaPonte and Nik Forsberg to bring "loosely Nordic" cuisine to various local restaurants and markets (Fet-Fisk is now run by Forsberg, Kate Romane, and Greg Austin). An opening date has yet to be set.
