WPD Reports: $100k in Jewelry Missing from House, Woman Says

All information is according to official police reports filed at the Whitemarsh Township Police Department. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Theft: 
At approximately 12:44 p.m. on Nov. 5, a North Wales resident told Whitemarsh Police that she believed a collection of jewelry had been removed from her parents’ closet at their house on the 600 block of Creek Lane, Flourtown. The woman said that her parents are currently in a retirement home and are preparing to sell their house.

The daughter noticed that the jewelry was missing during a recent visit to the home, and told police she suspects a former housekeeper, who she said recently moved unexpectedly to another state. The daughter estimated the jewelry was worth about $100,000.  Detectives continue to investigate.

Forgery:
At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, a Lafayette Hill woman reported to police that someone had written approximately $7500 in fraudulent checks from her deceased father’s bank account. According to the woman, the missing funds were discovered when her mother tried to a write a check to cover funeral costs and was notified that it would not clear.

The woman told police she suspected a certain individual, who had access to the checks and frequented locations where the checks were cashed.

Underage drinking:
At approximately 2:36 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, police say they located two 20-year-old Chestnut Hill College students inside a vehicle behind Kacher’s Jewelry at 426 Germantown Pike. Police say they cited Shawn Gill, of the 9600 block of Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, and Terence Lorenzo, of Queens, N.Y., for underage drinking after a breathalyzer test registered respective .07 and .03 BACs.

Fraud:
At approximately 5:17 p.m. on Nov. 5, a local business owner reported that an employee had opened a credit card in his name and used it to make several purchases totaling $1,200, at stores such as Best Buy and Game Stop.

The business owner said that he then terminated the employee and said she admitted to opening the card in his name.

Burglary:
At approximately 6:46 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, police responded to the 6000 block of Sheaff Lane, Fort Washington, for the report of a burglary. A resident told police that upon returning home, she noticed an open window in a playroom that had been previously unlocked, along with an open back door.

The resident also discovered that a wooden jewelry box and pillowcase were missing from an upstairs bedroom. The following items, valued at approximately $500, were missing:

• 30” white gold chain with white gold cross
• 2” rose brooch
• 1” wide nose ring
• A blue beaded necklace
• A pair of reading glasses
• Various silver and pewter chains

DUI:
At approximately 10:21 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, Whitemarsh Police were dispatched to the 500 block of Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington, for the report of an intoxicated pedestrian. Upon arrival, police located the individual inside a black Lexus that had heavy frontend damage, disabling the vehicle.

Police had the driver, a 62-year-old Gwynedd Valley man, perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed, the report said. The suspect told the officers that he had not been drinking but had taken Ambien the night before along with a pair of health medications.

Police had the suspect perform a breathalyzer test, which registered 0% for blood alcohol, police said. However, police determined that he had crashed into a fire hydrant in front of the Fort Washington State Park entrance and took him into custody under suspicion of DUI.

Court records do not yet show any charges as being filed.

Retail Theft:
On Nov 5^th at 5:17 pm, police were called to Kohl’s Department Store, 1301 Skippack Pk where Rhona Kalman, 60 yrs old of the 100 block of Eagle Dr in Plymouth Meeting was in custody for attempting to steal two vacuum cleaners. Ms Kalman walked in with an empty vacuum cleaner box, placed it on a display of vacuum cleaners, and then removed two boxes containing Shark vacuum cleaners valued at $509.98. She was arraigned by Judge Robert Sobeck on charges of Retail Theft and Receiving Stolen Property. She received ROR bail and was released.
