Philly's Rooster Soup Co. A 2017 'Food & Wine' Restaurant Of The Year

The restaurant is accruing accolades not only for its food, but for its altruistic mission.

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia's Rooster Soup Co. is making headlines again. Last time we wrote about the eatery that donates 100 percent of its proceeds to charity it was featured in GQ Magazine as one of the best new restaurants in the country.

Now the people behind Rooster Soup Co. (who also run Federal Donuts) can add another accolade to its list, as the eatery was named to Food & Wine Magazine's Restaurant Of The Year list.

"Restaurants of the Year is FOOD & WINE’s definitive list of the 10 most exciting new places to eat in America now," the magazine says of the list. "This year’s winners are raising the game in astonishing ways, showing us that food can be as fun, as expressive and as philanthropic as it is delicious."

Rooster Soup Co, in case you didn't know already, donates all profits to Broad Street Ministry's Hospitality Collective which provides meals and social services for vulnerable Philadelphians.

Much of the soup made at the eatery is created from left over parts from fried chicken made for Federal Donuts.

One of Rooster Soup Co.'s masterminds, Michael Solomonov, earned high honors at the James Beard Awards where he brought home the Outstanding Chef award, so you know Rooster's food is coming from a culinary master.

This is just a sample of the praise Rooster Soup Co. gets from Food and Wine's Jordana Rothman:

You don't have to know the backstory of the Yemenite chicken potpie to fall in love with it. You can just break through the flaky crust and find comfort in its thick, savory filling, fragrant with hawaij, a cumin-and-turmeric spice blend.
But when we ate at Rooster Soup Co. in Philadelphia, we did know the story. We knew that this dish represented the confluence of a lot of people, generosity, time and ingenuity, and that choosing to eat at this cozy, chrome-wrapped diner was itself a small act of philanthropy. And all of that made us love it even more.

Another eatery that made the list is Le Coucou in New York City, which is one of Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr's many restaurants. Starr was recently named the top restaurateur in the country at the James Beard Awards.

Rooster Soup Co. is located at 1526 Sansom St., Philadelphia.
