Bottom Dollar Foods Opening New Grocery Stores

Six stores, including one in Ambridge, will open Thursday in the Pittsburgh area.

Six new Bottom Dollar Food discount grocery stores, including a store in Ambridge, are opening Thursday in the Pittsburgh area.

Grand opening festivities start at 7:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The store at 651 11th St. will open to the public immediately after the ceremony.

At each new store location, former professional football players will sign autographs and greet customers from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Mike Merriweather, retired linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is scheduled to appear in the Ambridge store.

Also, as part of the grand openings, company spokeswoman Tenisha Waldo said the grocer plans to donate $500 to local organizations, including four schools in the Ambridge Area School District.

Waldo said the discount grocer recently opened seven other stores around Pittsburgh, including Baldwin, Penn Hills, McKeesport and Aliquippa.

With a strong focus on price, Bottom Dollar Food offers a “We Won’t Be Beat” guarantee, in which it will beat any competitor’s price on the same item by a penny. In addition, if a customer is dissatisfied with a purchase, all meats and produce come with a double-back guarantee that ensures an item is replaced and customers are given a full refund. Bottom Dollar Food also offers a double-money back guarantee on all private brand products.

The discount grocer announced expansion plans for Pittsburgh and Youngstown, OH, last year, estimating the store openings would create more than 800 jobs.

Ambridge residents say they are excited to see a new grocery store, after the borough lost its only in-town grocery store in 2007 with the closing of Foodland.

Bottom Dollar has also made good use of a former mill site. Old industrial buildings once stood where the Bottom Dollar store is now located and were razed a few years ago to make way for new development.

Other locations for stores opening Thursday in the Pittsburgh area include Castle Shannon and Butler. Former Steelers will sign autographs and greet customers at the following stores:

  • 750 Butler Crossing Shopping Center, Butler, (Randy Grossman)
  • 196 Bon Aire Plaza, Butler, (LC Greenwood)
  • 300 Mount Lebanon Blvd., Castle Shannon, (Rocky Bleier)
