Conestoga Shows Some Air In Its Offense
Joe Viviano threw for 260 yards in the Pioneers' opener.

coach John Vogan’s concerns about his offense entering this season may have been somewhat allayed by the Pioneers exploding for over 400 yards of total in Saturday's 31-14 victory over Owen J. Roberts in the season opener.
Quarterback Joe Viviano, making his first varsity start, threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, completing one pass for 71 yards and another for 45. Receivers Davonte Carter and Andrew Destefano combined for close 250 yards in receptions, but if there is an early theme to what the Pioneers may do this season, it’s throwing deep.
“I trust my receivers to get open, so I don’t mind laying it up for them and throwing it deep,” Viviano said.

If there is one area of concern it is recognizing defenses. Owen J. Roberts switched a few things, and Viviano made a few mistakes. He threw three interceptions, but it should be noted that two picks came off deflections.
“I think I learned to be smarter and make better reads off the interceptions,” Viviano said. “I think I gained more confidence from the opener, though. I picked the wrong guy to throw to, and I think the mistakes I make are correctable, not too big. I learned I can’t rush things as much. When they throw a new defense, I need to think more. But it looks like they’re going to let me throw this year, which is something I love. They’re going to let me look deep this year.”
