HARRISBURG, PA —State Reps. Brian Munroe and Nancy Guenst recognized 10 Blue Star Mothers from Pennsylvania Wednesday, presenting them with a citation in honor of Blue Star Mothers Month.

State Reps. Melissa Cerrato and Ben Sanchez attended the event, observed annually each May, at the state Capitol in support of the mothers residing in their districts.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a non-partisan organization comprised of mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or children who are veterans. Its members aim to support each other and their children while promoting patriotism. The group has nearly 6,000 members from more than 200 chapters throughout the country.

“It’s important for community leaders, legislators, and Blue Star Mothers to work together to bolster the positive impact we can have for military families,” Munroe said. “I want to thank everyone involved with Blue Star Mothers for the selfless work they do to ensure our servicemembers, veterans, and their families are cared for. We owe them the very best for the sacrifices they bravely undertake on our behalf.”

On Monday, the House Education Committee approved H.B. 1094, a bill introduced by Munroe and prime co-sponsored by state Rep. Milou Mackenzie, that would allow students in military families to have a smoother school transition when their families relocate.

Currently, students must wait until they are physically located within their new school district’s boundaries before they are allowed to register/enroll and begin attending their new school. This stipulation often creates consequences for the students, such as being forced into summer school or graduating high school later than expected.

Cerrato, Guenst, and Sanchez are co-sponsors of the bill.

“As both a mother and veteran myself, I am deeply thankful for your purpose. When our children decide to serve their country, they need to know they are being supported,” Guenst said. “The Blue Star Mothers are providing crucial support not only to active service members, but to each other. They’re a community who understands and encourages each other, and that is invaluable.”

“Your families are giving us the ultimate honor of protecting us both at home and abroad,” Cerrato said. “While we fight here in this building for all Pennsylvanians, your family members are fighting for our country, giving us the ability to stand in these halls and fight for what’s right.”
