📰 News we're reading

1. Food Tossed as Inspectors Flag West Chester Kitchen Problems (mychesco.com) — Health inspectors recently cited several West Chester eateries and West Chester University's Commons for unsafe food temperatures, sanitation lapses, and equipment issues, forcing some food to be discarded and repairs ordered by early October. Brother's Pizza, Two Birds Cafe, the Commons' Freshens & Rammy's Market, and Buffalo Wild Wings To Go all received specific corrections, while other nearby school and restaurant kitchens were found in compliance.

2. Chester County's Modern Literary Scene Include Bestsellers, New Voices (vista.today) — West Chester readers are part of a thriving Chester County literary scene that includes hometown names like suspense novelist Bryan Reardon and memoirist Donna Y. Ferris. The article spotlights bestselling, children's, and local-history authors from across the county, and notes that many of their books—and occasional readings and signings—are available through area bookstores and libraries.

3. Chester County Measles Outbreak More Than Triples to 83 Cases (mychesco.com) — Chester County's measles outbreak, centered in the region around West Chester, has surged to 83 confirmed cases, making it the Philadelphia area's only active transmission hotspot. Health officials are ramping up school outreach and temporary vaccination clinics as statewide cases near 1,000, stressing that most infections are among unvaccinated people and urging residents to check their MMR protection.

4. Pa. assembled a council of reading experts to guide literacy reforms — but members say they've had little say in the process (pennlive.com) — Pennsylvania's new Reading Leadership Council, which includes a West Chester University professor, is supposed to guide districts toward stronger, research-based reading programs but members say they've had little real input so far. As the state revises curriculum lists and shifts leadership, the debate over local control, funding gaps, and how prescriptive Harrisburg should be will affect how West Chester-area schools teach reading.
