LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA —With the Prickett Preserve at Edgewood project bringing apartments and businesses to the township, officials are working on road improvements to handle the additional traffic to the tune of more than $5 million.

The road improvements are in three phases for the project, which includes the second Wegmans in Bucks County, 200 apartments, and seven commercial buildings.

James R. Majewski, Lower Makefield Township's community development director, said he didn't have the total cost breakdown since the road improvements are courtesy of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and project developer DeLuca Homes.

The second Wegmans grocery store in Bucks County is expected to open sometime early next year as part of the Prickett Preserve at Edgewood project on Stony Hill Road. A specific opening date has yet to be determined.

The Wegmans grocery store will be located across the street from Shady Brook Farm. Wegmans operates its only store in Bucks County in Warrington off Route 611.

He said there are three components to the project:

Phase 1 includes Stony Hill Road frontage improvements.

He said Phase 1 work is "substantially completed" and includes traffic signal and turning lane installation on Stony Hill Road at the Prickett Preserve/Shady Brook Farm intersection plus road resurfacing along the project frontage.

Phase 2 calls for Route 332 Bypass improvements, a $5,578,630 cost that is partially funded with a $3 million Multimodal Transportation Fund Investments grant to improve safety and mobility in Bucks County.

Majewski said Phase 2 should be completed by the end of the year. Motorists should stay alert for work being performed between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The improvements include:

  • Roadway widening along Route 332 for an additional eastbound thru lane between Lindenhurst Road and the Interstate 295 interchange.
  • Additional turning lane to provide a dual-left turn lane from westbound Route 332 onto Stony Hill Road.
  • Roadway widening along Interstate 295 Westbound Off Ramp to provide a dual-right turn lane and a left turn lane onto Route 332.

Phase 3 will include pedestrian improvements on Stony Hill Road, Majewski said.

The pedestrian improvements, which begin this week, include:

  • Roadway widening to realign Stony Hill Road over the Interstate 295 overpass, add a stamped brick concrete median in Stony Hill Road
  • Pedestrian path installation on Stony Hill Road to connect the Prickett Preserve project to Edgewood Village.

Wegmans recently announced that it would hire full-time 400 employees for its 94,024-square-foot store that's under construction.
