Letter: What Happened to St. Casimir's Tree?

A letter to the editor from Nancy Peterson of Warren.

Does anyone know why the tree at the St. Casimir housing complex in Warren was taken down?

When the Polish church was demolished they kept the cornerstone and the huge, ancient tree. A new low-income housing complex was constructed around the tree.  Obvious efforts were made to preserve the tree when all else was demolished. So I was stunned to see the tree was gone today.

It was one of these ancient trees covered with the heart tattoos of generations of young lovers.  How many residents have carved their initials into it?  It was one of those old trees where the oldest carvings had spread so wide and aged as to become lost in the bark.  It was a darned beautiful tree.  Now it's a huge mound of wood chips.
