Brown Carries Central Coventry Over South Kingstown

Central Coventry remains undefeated, taking South Kingstown American down 13-1.

A dominant pitching performance and an offensive explosion propelled one team to victory on Wednesday night. The other will have to fight its way through the losers bracket of the District 3 Tournament.

South Kingstown American faced off against Central Coventry on Wednesday night at Paine Field in the Major Division All-Star tournament. Coventry won the shortened contest, due to the ten run rule, in four innings 13-1.

In the bottom half of the first, Coventry capitalized on two errors by SK. Jared Hayes' wild throw to first base allowed Central's AJ Morris to score. Coventry's Rick Vaughn brought in the third run of the inning, with a sacrifice fly.

Effective baserunning netted South Kingstown their lone run of the game. In the top of the second, Matt Gage, a pinch-runner for pitcher Asa Nyblom, scored on a successful double steal, cutting their deficit to 3-1.

Through three innings of play, Coventry's starting pitcher, Justin Brown had 5 strikeouts and had allowed just one run. He finished with 8 strikeouts in four innings of work.

Brown held his own at the plate as well. He had two home runs, both two-run shots, in the bottom half of the third inning. Central Coventry blew the game open scoring ten runs in the inning, propelling them to a 13-1 lead.

Brown's second home run, to left center, extended the lead to 12-1 and the rout was on. AJ Morris, Colin Sytyler, Zack Garcia, and Robert Regivue each notched RBI's in the inning.

South Kingstown American was shut down once again in the fourth inning, as their three outs all were on strikeouts. Central Coventry advances to the next round in the winners bracket where they will face Warwick National. It will be a tough test as Warwick National is 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 26-1.

South Kingstown will have to fight their way through the losers bracket and they face off against the winner of the Naragansett/East Greenwich game.

Coventry's head coach, Anthony Feole, spoke about the mental make-up of his team. "These kids are focused and play hard together," he said, "They are mentally prepared and ready to play every time out."

"Colin Sytler is an amazing second baseman and is at the ball all the time," the coach added.
