Coventry Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Wins 10-2 Over Warwick Vets

Pitching, hitting and defense were all solid on Monday.

Behind a five-hitter from righthander Sarah Koerner and solid hitting throughout the lineup, Coventry defeated Warwick Vets, 10-2, for its second win in a row. The victory put them at 3-2, above .500 for the first time this season while the Lady Hurricanes dropped to 0-5.

After a scoreless first two innings by both clubs, a five-run fifth inning featuring three hits and two costly errors by Vets fielders paved the way for Coventry and sealed the fate of the hosts.

Tatiana Webb began the decisive inning in slugger mode, smashing a solo homer between the leftfielder and centerfielder, completing the trip around the bags despite losing her sneaker at first base.

Koerner then walked and Kristin Gallagher reached base on a fly ball error to right. Nikki Bent had a RBI sacrifice fly. A nifty double steal resulted in another Coventry run and Charlotte Bracken drove in the fourth run with a single. An infield error produced another run. Finally, Amanda Reid completed the scoring with another RBI single.

The Lady Oakers added three more runs in the fourth on successive singles by Gallagher and Erica Ball to set the table for Charlotte Bracken, who tripled in both of her teammates. Meg Bell promptly drove in Bracken with a single.

Warwick Vets scored its only runs in the fifth starting with a leadoff single by Courtney Buratczuk, another single by Alyssa Palumbo and a Bethany Rhodes double.

The Lady Oakers padded the lead in the seventh with two more runs on four consecutive singles by Reid and Webb followed by RBI hits by Erica Ball and Gallagher.

Coventry had 14 hits overall, giving Webb welcome support at bat and in the field by committing just one error.

Meanwhile, Koerner, who struck out five batters with no walks, ended the game on a flourish, retiring the last seven batters. The crafty righty needed just five pitches to dispose of the Lady Hurricanes in the sixth and in the final inning recorded successive swinging K’s before gloving a popup at the mound for the final out.

"We put our bat on the ball better than the past,” said head coach Chris Daigneault. Sarah Koerner also hit her spots and kept them off balance a little bit and that made it easier. Tat (Webb) is a sophomore and good little hitter who is
growing, learning and trying harder. It was a pretty good effort for the most
part. Chariho (next opponent) will be a good test.”
