Oakers to Play in Rhody Invitational

The Coventry boys' volleyball team will be tested against some of the best teams in the area.

COVENTRY - Sixteen of the best high school boys’ volleyball teams in southern New England will battle it out at the fourth annual Rhody Invitational on April 23 at Bryant University.

The Coventry High squad will be making its third appearance in the tournament, after finishing 1-7 last year and 1-6 in 2006.

Last year, the Oakers faced New Bedford High, Chariho Regional, Newton North High and Chicopee Comprehensive High in pool play. Their lone victory came against New Bedford.

This year, Coventry will once again face some tough competition in pool play. The Oakers will take on LaSalle Academy, Haverhill High and Milford High. 

LaSalle is in fourth place in Division 1, with a 4-3 record. Haverhill recently won the gold bracket of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Showcase of Champions Tournament in Holyoke, Mass. Milford is 7-0 this season.

At the Rhody Invitational, Coventry will play two games against each team in its pool. Following pool play, the top two teams in each of the four pools will be seeded into a gold bracket. The bottom two in each pool will compete in a silver bracket. 

The games will start at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs, as seating will be scarce.
