White Earns Girls Basketball Ages 10-11 Championship Win

Defeats Green, 25-17, in Parks & Recreation Summer League contest.

The White 10-11 year-old squad relied on stifling defense and scoring from its trio of talented offensive players to capture the Coventry Parks and Recreation Department championship, 25-17, over Green, on Tuesday night.

The game stayed nip and tuck throughout the first half between the two squads, who split during the regular season, losing by one point to each other and also winning decisively over each other, as well.

In the title game, Green kept pace with White in the first half as both teams had strong defense. Several players also had near-misses on great opportunities near the hoop.

Just three White team members scored, but that was all the offense of the championship squad needed thanks to great effort and execution by Kasey Gagan, often leading the charge with hard drives to the hoop. Victoria Matson and Lindsey Rugg also chipped in with points inside and out.

White still could not shake their opponent as Crosby helped set up different teammates with pinpoint passing, including a few assists to Charlotte Brewer on a few baskets she converted inside to stay within two at intermission.

Once the second half began, Green slowly built its lead to as much as eight, 19-11, and held off their rival until the end.

Desiree Silva, Madeline Catlow and the Messier sisters- Jordan, Madison and Loren - also  displayed fine all-around games. Gagan was named playoff MVP for her sterling play.

“We kept attacking the basket and pushing the tempo,” said head coach Jamie Messier, assisted by his wife, Sue Messier. “All the girls also played great.”

Other members of the Green squad included Natalie Gannon, Colby Crosby, Danica Aguirre, Rachel Van Nostrand and Skylar Pomfret. Head coaches were Sam Cornell and Brittany Carlton.
