2 Arrested In Cranston In Connection To Home Invasion, Stolen Car

Police said they had to put an inflatable raft in the Pocasset River to find the suspects.

CRANSTON, RI — Two people were arrested in Cranston Friday after police said the men broke into a home at gunpoint.

Miguel Veras Martes, 19, of Providence and Daevon Silva, 20, of Pawtucket were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, conspiracy, obstruction of an officer in execution of duty and resisting arrest.

Around 2:15 p.m., police were called to an apartment on Fernbrook Court for a report of three men breaking into an apartment. The caller described the men to police and said one of them was pointing a gun, while the other two also appeared to be armed. Police said they were told the men drove away from the area in a four-door white sedan with Massachusetts plates.

A description of the vehicle was broadcasted to local area police. Four minutes later, an officer working a road construction detail said they saw the sedan pass him on Cranston Street, before turning onto Briggs Street.

A second officer saw the sedan turn onto Florida Avenue, and as he approached, the cars door suddenly opened, and the suspects ran down Aplin Street behind a home, then jumped over a fence before running down an embankment, police said. Police said the officer lost sight of the suspects when they entered the woods along the Pocasset River.

Officers set up a search perimeter and brought in three K-9 teams and Rhode Island State Police to assist with the search. The initial search was unsuccessful, so Cranston fire brought in an inflatable raft to search along the river.

Police said they then saw Martes lying down covered in leaves, trying to hide from police. He was then placed into custody. Then around 8:20 p.m., police received a call about a man seated on the curb next to Florida Avenue covered in mud and missing a shoe. Police identified the man as Silva and placed him into custody.

Both suspects were held overnight at the Cranston Police Department, but police said they are still looking for more suspects.

Police said they then did an inquiry into the sedan and learned it had been reported stolen out of Pawtucket on Oct. 11.
