CRANSTON, RI — A 19-year-old with a stolen handgun stashed in his backpack was apprehended at Lang's Bowlarama after a struggle with officers, police said.
A caller reported a man was holding a "handgun inside a white backpack and had made statements indicating he intended to harm someone inside the bowling alley" shortly before 10:45 p.m. Saturday, the Cranston Police Department said in a media release.
Officers arrived at the Niantic Avenue bowling alley and identified the man with the backpack as 19-year-old Jayden Rodriguez of Cranston, the release said.
Rodriguez "acknowledged that there was a firearm inside his backpack," according to the release.
"As officers attempted to take Rodriguez into custody, a struggle ensued," the release said. "Several individuals accompanying Rodriguez interfered with officers and pushed officers as they attempted to make the arrest."
The Rhode Island State Police and Providence Police Department were called in to lend a hand and "took additional individuals into custody during the disturbance," according to the release.
"The firearm, which was loaded, was subsequently determined to have been reported stolen out of South Carolina," the release said.
Rodriguez was arrested and charged with license or permit required for carrying a pistol, large capacity feeding devices prohibited, possession of a stolen firearm, modification of a semiautomatic weapon, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to the release.
Rodriguez was booked into the Adult Correctional Institutions, the release said.
A second 19-year-old, Ismael Monge of Woonsocket, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, according to the release.
A 16-year-old from Massachusetts was "also arrested in connection with the disturbance and released to a parent," the release said.
