Couple Killed In Crash With Accused Murderer Fleeing Cranston Identified: DA

The couple killed in the crash were a husband and wife from Bristol, Rhode Island, the Bristol County, Massachusetts, DA's office said.

SWANSWEA, MA โ€” The Rhode Island couple killed in a crash with a Massachusetts man accused of murder in Cranston have been identified.

Carlolyn Carcasi, 54, James Carcasi, 53, a husband and wife from Bristol, were killed in the early Friday morning crash at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 136 in Swansea, according to the Bristol County, Massachusetts, District Attorney's Office.

An Infinity G37 slammed into the side of a Subaru Ascent about 12:15 a.m. with both vehicles sustaining "catastrophic damage," the Swansea Police Department said in a media release.

"The vehicle that was struck was fully engulfed in flames," the release said. "First responders and bystanders attempted to extinguish the fire, but both occupants โ€” a man and a woman โ€” were pronounced dead at the scene."

A short time before the crash, the driver of the Infinity, Demitri Sousa, 28, of Seekonk, Massachusetts, gunned down a man through the door of his Cranston home, the Cranston Police Department said in a media release

Sousa and the slain man, 35-year-old Javon Lawson, had been in a "prior dispute involving the suspect and the victim over a mutual female acquaintance," the release said.

Sousa survived the crash and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, according to the release.

The Cranston police secured a warrant charging Sousa with murder, using a firearm while committing a crime of violence and carrying a pistol without a license, according to the release.
