Geneva Pond Bridge To Close For Complete Rebuild

The Geneva Pond Bridge on the Providence-North Providence line will be closed until the fall while it is completely rebuilt.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Starting next Monday, the Geneva Pond bridge on the Providence-North Providence line will close ahead of a major construction project. The bridge will remain closed until this fall as crews completely disassemble and rebuild the more than 100-year-old bridge.

The bridge, which carries Route 7/Douglas Avenue over the West River, is 103 years old and carries around 10,500 vehicles per day. Because it classified as structurally deficient, the $5.2 million project will completely replace the bridge. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said the new bridge will be built in the original footprint and will also replace the sidewalks on both sides.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured along Lubec Street, Smithfield Road and Cushing Street.

During the closure, RIDOT will be providing free transportation services for pedestrians who would otherwise use the bridge to get to businesses on the other side through a partnership with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA). The para-transit service will be in place until construction is complete, which is scheduled for fall 2019.
