Avengers on Ice

Coming soon (hopefully): a high school girl's hockey team.

East Greenwich High School may be on the verge of creating a new sports team.

We’re working with Cranston’s Girls Ice Hockey program — itself a combination of Cranston East and Cranston West — to form one larger team. Hopefully we’ll be able to get it started in time for this year’s season, but since nearly everyone on Cranston’s team is a senior, they seem to be more interested in joining with us next year. Rather than creating varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen teams, one team will be open to all high school students.

Moreover, my friend, who’s working with Mr. Cobain, the athletic director, to help form the team, says that you could probably pick up the actual hockey skills as you go; being able to really skate is the most important prerequisite.

Girl’s hockey should give people already involved in sports a chance to do something different; I think it might also give people who don’t play sports and don’t think they’ll be able to start in high school a chance to get in on the ground floor.

Of course, it’ll also give girls who already play ice hockey a place to play, since outside leagues don’t play during the school season. It’s easy enough to tell a girl to play on the boy’s team, but my friend tells me they are like two different sports: the pace of boys and girls hockey differs significantly, as do some rules. Anyone interested in playing should talk to Mr. Cobain.
