Amy Flynn Earns Girl Scout Silver Award
GSSNE awarded Amy Flynn the Silver Award for her project Mission Visit, executed November 7, 2015, at the Grand Islander.
June 8, 2016 – Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England awarded
the Silver Award to Amy Flynn of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 721 at the
Newport-Middletown Girl Scout Crossover Ceremony. The Silver Award is the second
highest award in Girl Scouts. To earn it, a scout must do a project that has
local benefit and interacts with people outside the community. Amy’s project,
called Mission Visit, focused on educating people about visiting nursing homes
so everyone, including residents, can be more comfortable. The Grand Islander
Nursing Home in Middletown, RI, graciously allowed Amy to conduct Mission Visit
at their facility, on November 7, 2015. Amy had lots of help from her Project
Advisor (Lynn Cavanagh, the Activities Director at the Grand Islander) and her
Troop Volunteer (Emily Daughan). For more information about Mission Visit,
nursing home visiting tips and tricks, and how to join Girl Scouts, visit the
website Amy created, http://minou67.wix.com/missionvisit.
Amy’s project consisted of a class, tour, and then a visit with the residents.
The class was taught to 9 participants attending Mission Visit, and used a
PowerPoint, brochure, and the website previously mentioned. Then, the class was
taken on a tour of the Grand Islander by Ms. Terry Moreau, Activities Staff at
the Grand Islander. The project ended with Amy taking the participants to help
the residents of the Grand Islander play bingo. The project was a success and
everyone, residents included, seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.
Amy attended All Saints Academy for two years before attending Gaudet Middle
School for sixth through eighth grade. She will be attending Middletown High
School as a freshman this fall. In the past year, Amy participated in the Gaudet
Times (the school newspaper) and Student Council. She was in the school chorus
and selected to be in Select Choir, a more advanced singing group of the school.
She is also a member of the Middletown High School Robotics Team (Rhode
Warriors), Gaudet’s Science Olympiad Team and she is a High Honors student. She
has been in Girl Scouts since she was a Daisy in kindergarten. Amy resides in
Middletown, Rhode Island with her parents Terri and Michael and her older
brothers, Mike and Conner.
Girls in Troop 721 range from ages 12 to 15 years old. They attend Gaudet Middle
School, Thompson Middle School, All Saints Academy, and Middletown and Tiverton
High Schools.
