Attemped Blu-Ray Return Leads to Shoplifting Arrest

The arrest occurred after a Newport woman attempted to return an item she allegedly picked up in the Best Buy store after entering the store empty-handed.

The reported the following arrests on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010:

  • Middletown police arrested Elizabeth A. Barker, 32, of 325 Spring St., Apt #2, Newport, around 11:16 a.m. Monday on a misdemeanor attempted larceny charge after police responded to a shoplifting accusation at the store on West Main Road. A store employee and manager alleged that Barker had entered the store empty-handed but picked up a Samsung Blu-Ray disk player and attempted to return it for a store credit.
  • Police arrested Kevin M. Hochstetler, 24, of 3 ½ Bull St., Newport around 2:40 p.m. Monday on East Main Road on an outstanding court warrant issued by the Second District Court for his alleged failure to pay court fines.
