EXETER, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management collected more than 200 Christmas trees over the past two weeks, to be used to help protect the state's river ecosystems.

The department collected the trees over the past two weeks at the Division of Fish and Wildlife's Outdoor Education Office in Exeter.

"Thanks to everyone who donated their Christmas trees to our Trees for Trout initiative and the volunteers of Trout Unlimited Narragansett Chapter 225 who helped collect them!" the department wrote on Facebook. "We received close to 240 trees to use in riverbank restoration projects."

Over the summer, teams will place the trees along riverbanks, slowing the flow of water. This traps sediments as the tree breaks down, which stabilizes the bank, while also providing a refuge for turtles, fish and other marine organisms in the tree branches.
