URI’s Hurricanes Project Will Be On Discovery TV
Larry King's 'In View' will feature URI's Hurricanes: Science and Society website as a resource for education and preparedness.

The University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography will be featured during a special edition of In View, hosted by the internationally known, Emmy-award winning Larry King.
In View is an educational series that aims to inform and enlighten viewers both nationally and internationally on a variety of topics such as medicine, environmental science, agriculture, architecture, business and technology.
The series profiles stories that have an impact on the lives of many and showcases the work of the Nation’s most innovative individuals.

This special edition of In View will focus on natural disasters. It will feature GSO’s Hurricanes: Science and Society project funded by the National Science Foundation and its comprehensive interactive website as an essential resource for hurricane education and preparedness.
Members of the HSS Team, including URI principal investigators Gail Scowcroft and Isaac Ginis, will be spotlighted during the episode. The half-hour documentary will air on the Discovery Channel, Monday, April 8 at 7 a.m. EDT and PDT.

The HSS website and its associated educational resources provide information on the science of hurricanes, methods of observing hurricanes, modeling and forecasting of hurricanes, how hurricanes impact society, and how people and communities can prepare for and mitigate the impacts of hurricanes.
In addition to in-depth science content, the website includes educational resources, case studies, and a historical storm interactive. All content has undergone rigorous peer review by a national panel of hurricane scientists.
Information is tailored for specific audiences, including middle school through undergraduate educators and students, the general public, and the media.

The URI Graduate School of Oceanography is located on the university's 200-acre Narragansett Bay Campus. On Narragansett Bay's West Passage, with a deep-water pier and easy access to the open Atlantic, the campus offers an ideal location from which to explore the world ocean.
Members of the GSO community meet research challenges that confront the nation and the world. GSO faculty and facilities address such issues as climate change, hurricanes, pollution, fisheries depletion, and the need for new technology for undersea research and exploration.
