South County Art Association

South County Art Association invites you to our Annual ‘Quality Seconds’ Pottery and Art Sale, featuring perfectly imperfect pottery at perfect prices. Seconds pottery can be a bit wonky with minor imperfections, but it doesn't affect the overall beauty and usability of the piece. This is pottery with extra character! This event is a testament to the strong support of our local potters, who donate hundreds of pottery pieces throughout the year to support our nonprofit. You'll find mugs, plates, bowls, vases, and platters. We’ll also be offering demonstrations in pottery wheel throwing and printmaking techniques, so you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the artmaking process. From 9am to 2pm. Our 53rd Annual Earthworks Exhibition will be on view featuring works of clay from local artists. Our gallery store will be open and is filled with our members' art! From 9am to 5pm.

Local Author Niles Major Book Signing at Wakefield Books for his new novel, Narragansett Wild. Narragansett Wild tells the story of Rook Williams, a rich-kid sailor turned biker, a draft dodger with a sharp mind and a hunger for infamy. He hits URI and Narragansett Pier in the late 1960s chasing trouble and finds it in Jimmy Chin, a lifeguard, a leader of men, a drug smuggler with zero inhibitions, and the most popular guy in town. Inspired by true events, Narragansett Wild is a gritty, fast-moving crime saga about freedom, rebellion, and the price of chasing legend. Niles Major spent years by the water, first as a lifeguard, then as a sailor chasing wind past the edges of the map. The sea taught him to pay attention: to silence, to danger, to the signs that come before a storm. He didn’t start writing until his forties. Now, his work leans into the places memory and imagination meet, where every character has a past, and every horizon holds something just out of view. A hands-on ceramic workshop, “Berry Bowl Clay Class,” will be held on Sunday, May 17 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Rebekah Cook Art in Wakefield.
Participants will learn hand-building techniques to create a functional ceramic berry bowl from raw clay. The class is open to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced makers.
The $55 fee includes all materials, instruction, and kiln firings. Finished pieces will be completed after firing and ready for use.

A hands-on ceramic workshop, the “Frozen Pond” Stoneware Class, will take place on Friday, May 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rebekah Cook Art, located at 344 Main St. in Wakefield.
The workshop introduces participants to layered glazing techniques, allowing them to create a custom stoneware piece with unique color combinations. The class is designed for all skill levels, and all ages are welcome.
The $20 workshop fee includes studio use, instruction, glazing, firing, and light refreshments, along with coffee and tea. Participants will select and purchase their stoneware piece during the event, with prices typically ranging from $25 to $65.
All finished pieces are microwave-, oven-, and dishwasher-safe. The event is also BYOB-friendly.

Local Author Debra Zannelli Book Signing at Wakefield Books, 10am to noon. In Sister World: The Arrival, we are introduced to Terah, a planet in an alternate universe that is a mirror of Earth. Terah is at war, and their despotic ruler is bringing the war to Earth. The fate of Terah is in the hands of Kahill and Becarra, who brave the wormhole connecting both worlds to search for their mirrors and find a way to warn our world of the quiet invasion and help Earth fight to keep her freedom. Debra Zannelli began writing in high school, but put it aside for many years, returning to it in 1996, while recovering from surgery to remove a non-cancerous brain tumor, and completing her first book, Dark Night of The Soul. She is now the author of eight published novels, while also working as a teacher’s assistant. Inspired by both the insights, courage and resiliency of our youth, she wrote her Sister World Series with just a touch of whimsy as well as science that has been meticulously researched. Willi Ninja: Vogue Legend&nbsp;is an inspiring story of the incomparable dancer Willi Ninja, Grandfather of Vogue and star of the film Paris Is Burning. With an accessible text and dynamic illustrations, Joy Michael Ellison and Nabi H. Ali trace Willi’s path against the odds as he brings his signature moves to the dance style known as vogue and finds his spotlight at the Harlem drag balls where a performer known as Willi Ninja is born. Providing context, community, and comprehension of queer and trans culture for young history buffs, the lively narrative is followed by back matter delving into more details about Willi Ninja and what life was like during his time. Joy Michael Ellison is a writer, a professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Rhode Island, and a grassroots, community activist. Their published books include Sylvia and Marsha Start a Revolution! They are interested in using stories, both fictional and true, to build community, document social movements, and imagine a liberated world, and believe that storytelling is integral to healing, transformation, resistance, and survival. Deans Mill Farm 

Built in the mid-1700s as a functioning livestock farm, Deans Mill Farm has gone through an evolution in recent decades. A full renovation of the historic buildings and rejuvenation of the surrounding 70+ acres has made the property into the incredible venue it is today. Deans Mill Farm now operates primarily as a private event space and five-room bed and breakfast tucked down a private road in Stonington, Connecticut. It shares its property with Dragonfly Equestrian Center and is home to dozens of horses. On the property lies meadows, hiking trails, beautiful fields and Dragonfly Disc Golf. The property can be rented for weddings, birthday parties and other special events. Additionally, the bed and breakfast can be rented by the room or reserved in its entirety for complete privacy. The Farm has the ability to host small private indoor events for up to 50 guests in the Farmhouse. Outdoor tented events are our specialty, with numerous locations on-site that are picturesque for your celebration. Outdoor tented celebrations can accommodate up to 250 guests.
