The Eastern Surfing Association held its Northeast Regional surfing contest on Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, at Second Beach in Middletown.
The Eastern Surfing Association held the 2011 Northeast Regional Surfing Championships at Second Beach in Middletown this past Friday and Saturday.
The Northeast region encompasses districts from as far away as New Jersey, Maine, and the Great Lakes. The Southern New England district hosted the contest for the first time in more than a decade, and about 200 surfers came to compete.
Friday was fortunate to have plentiful sunshine and lots of waves in the four to six-foot range. Competitors and specatators lounged on the beach and soaked up some sun.

Clouds moved in on Saturday and the waves were smaller, but the contest continued. Rhode Islanders scored well and most of the top six finalists in each division were invited to the Easterns Grand Finals in Cape Hatteras, NC, in September.
