Narragansett PD Encourage Residents, Business Owners To Register Security Cameras
When a crime occurs, officers will be able to identify registered cameras near the location of the incident and get help from the community.
NARRAGANSETT, RI — The Narragansett Police Department is encouraging residents and business owners to join its camera registration program.
Police Chief Sean Corrigan said the program enables residents and business owners to register the locations of their video surveillance systems with the Narragansett Police Department.
When a crime occurs, officers will be able to identify registered cameras near the location of the incident and enlist the assistance of the community in gathering video evidence to follow up on leads. Registrants may be asked to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time. If necessary, police may request a copy of any video captured by the camera, which can assist in the investigation of a crime.

"Home and business surveillance systems are becoming more and more common," Corrigan said. "These simple tools can provide our detectives with valuable investigative evidence and allow community members to participate in the safety of their own neighborhoods."
Registration is voluntary, and the program is free. Corrigan said registering a camera does not provide Narragansett police with direct access to the camera.

Personal information will be kept confidential by the department unless subject to disclosure by court order, Corrigan said. Information will only be accessed by law enforcement who are investigating a crime in the vicinity of the camera's location.
Registration can also be canceled anytime by notifying the department's detective division.
Those who wish to register their camera can access the camera registration form here.
Any questions about the program can be directed to the Narragansett Police Department’s Detective Division at crp@narragansettri.gov.
