This Spring, Brake For Turtles

Rhode Island wildlife experts are asking drivers to keep an eye out for turtles on local roads as the weather warms up.

As temperatures rise, wildlife experts are reminding drivers to watch out for turtles on Rhode Island roadways. If you see a turtle trying to cross the street, please stop, and, if possible, give them a hand.

"Please remember, turtles cannot withstand being hit by cars," the Wildlife Rehabilitator's Association of Rhode Island said. "[Turtles] impacted by vehicles are disproportionally adult, egg bearing females, which means they are integral to the health and sustainability of our turtle populations."

If it's safe to do so, pull over when you see a turtle to help them get across roads. When lifting a turtle, use both hands and lift at the sides of the shell, keeping hands away from its face. Never lift a turtle by its tail, which can injure the animal's vertebrae. Always try to place the turtle in the direction it was already heading.
