Teen Drunkenly Drives 101 MPH: South Kingstown Police

Police accused Sarah Currie, 19, of failing her field sobriety tests and having a blood-alcohol level of between 0.178 and 0.179.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A teenager is facing drunken driving charges after police said she was caught driving over 100 mph in South Kingstown.

Police said they pulled over Sarah Currie, 19, of Charlestown, on Sunday after they caught her driving 101 mph on Route 1 just before 10 p.m. When officers spoke to Currie, they smelled alcohol as she spoke and saw her eyes were bloodshot and watery, according to police.

Police said Currie failed a series of field sobriety tests. Her blood-alcohol level was registered at 0.178 and 0.179, police said.

"Driving impaired is a bad decision and leads to much worse decisions, like driving 101 mph on Route 1," Police Chief Matthew Moynihan said. "We are fortunate that our officers moved quickly to get this dangerous driver off the road."

Currie was arraigned at the police station and was charged with driving under the influence of liquor (0.15 or greater) and possession of alcohol by a minor.

She is scheduled to appear in Washington County District Court on Oct. 26.
