The 'Joke's' On Us!

     Today, April 1st, better known. to many, as, 'April Fool's Day', is a day for 'pranking', and, pranksters, alike. I've, always, been taught, that, to 'call your brethren a 'fool', makes one a BIGGER fool', but, I guess, insofar, as today is concerned, it's alright. Having never, truly, been a 'jokester', this, day, holds no special-appeal, for me; Naturally, however, as a child, it was, kinda, fun, to catch someone 'off-guard' with a, silly-'sally', and, trick them, e.g., 'Hey, your shoelace is untied!' Wow...I 'went for broke', huh? The history behind, this, tradition, is a bit 'muddled'; But, some, historians, believe the most popular theory, which, is, that, France changed its calendar in the 1500s so that the New Year would begin in January to match the Roman calendar instead of beginning at the start of spring, in late March or early April.
However word of the change traveled slowly, and many people in rural areas continued to celebrate the New Year in the spring. These country dwellers became known as 'April fools', so, the story goes. According to Alex Boese, curator of the Museum of Hoaxes in San Diego, California, the French theory is completely wrong, because the day that the French celebrated the beginning of the year legally was Easter day, so it never really was associated with April first. 'Traditionally it was only a legal start to the year—people in France did actually celebrate [the New Year] on January first for as long as anybody could remember.'
Boese believes instead that April Fools' Day simply grew out of age-old European spring festivals of renewal, in which pranks and camouflaging one's identity are common. Whatever, the reason, that, this, 'age-old' tradition, became, such, who, truly, knows? All one, really, need to know is, that, if he or she is 'prone to playing pranks on people', well...today IS the day to go 'hog-wild'. By the way...have you heard that we're in for ANOTHER snow-storm? Me, either. Was, just attempting an April Fool's joke. See what I mean...I really STINK at this!
