EMA Officials Ask People To Stay Out Of Water: Dangerous Surf & High Waves

Five people went into the water on Sunday. The rescuers had difficulty trying to reach them.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — Three people were taken by rescue to the hospital on Sunday after they were swept off a jetty at Camp Cronin, Point Judith. Narragansett fire Chief Scott Partington said two other people also went into the water. They may have gone to the hospital independently but were not taken by ambulance.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. Two patients suffered serious injuries. One had a "severe head laceration and possible skull fracture. The second had a "very deep" leg laceration, he said.

The high waves complicated the rescue, he said. Narragansett firefighters battled surf crashing on top of them as they waded in to reach the victims. Police and bystanders helped carry stretchers, he said.

"We're urging people to stay off the rocks," he said. Dangerous conditions are expected through the end of the week, due to Jose. When people disregard the warnings, they put first responders in peril, as well as themselves.

Newport police also sent out a warning to people about the danger at the beach. No life guards are on duty, and Jose's impact is causing rip currents and big waves.
