Work Starts on New Great Island Bridge; June 2017 Eyed as Completion Date

There will be lane closures over the life of the $8.5 million project.

Work has started on the new Great Island Bridge in Narragansett.

Last week, a new signal was installed at the bridge, which will dictate a new traffic pattern: one lane of alternating traffic on Great Island Road between State Street and Basin Road. Officials said additional lane closures may be necessary on Galilee Escape Road for drainage and utility work.

The $8.5 million project is scheduled to be completed in June 2017.

The new bridge will be built in two phases, with half of the existing bridge remaining open to both vehicles and pedestrians with a temporary traffic signal to guide traffic on and off of the island.

The original bridge was built in 1959. It’s about 200 feet long.
