'Colors of Summer' Opens at Reel Gallery

An eclectic collection of art attracted a crowd to the Reel Gallery's "Colors of Summer" opening on Friday. The gallery was packed with a diverse crowd for much of the evening, as local artists and art lovers took in the wide array of pieces—ranging from sculpture and painting to photography and public art—while enjoying live music supplied by Newport's Castle the Band. 

"I am impressed by the flow of the show, how the pieces move from light to dark and really work together," said artist Heather Adels. "I've never seen such a wide range of pieces work this well together in one space." 

For the indie artists involved, the exhibition's diverse selection is a chance to expose a wider range of people to their work.

Reflecting on what enticed him to contribute to the show, Danny Bryant explained, "Leah (the gallery manager) pulls together a good group," said artist Danny Bryant.  "People that are here supporting an artist with a completely different style are also going to see your work, which doesn't often happen." 

The unique nature of "Colors of Summer" expands beyond the disparate collection of art on the walls. The gallery's mission is to provide a venue for local artists to display and sell works of art while giving back to the community. In accordance with this mission, a portion of the show's proceeds will benefit the Newport Housing Hotline. Another distinctive aspect of the show is the "affordable art" wall, where pieces are $25 or less.
