Coronavirus Transmission 'Substantial' In RI As Cases Climb

After spending months at "moderate" levels, the state moved up the CDC's community transmission indicator.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Coronavirus transmission is on the rise in Rhode Island.

On Monday, the state was upgraded from "moderate" to "substantial" community transmission, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention's indicator. The scale is based on the number of cases per 100,000 people. Over the last seven days, there were 57.4 cases per 100,000 people in Rhode Island, putting it in the substantial range of 50 to 99.9 cases.

The change come aid a rising trend in COVID-19 cases in Rhode Island. Last week's data showed the highest weekly percent positive rate in months. At 1 percent, it was double that of the week prior.

During a news conference last week, Gov. Dan McKee said he had no immediate plans to reimpose a mask mandate or restrictions on businesses.

"We're fortunate that still very much in control of the situation with our vaccinations," McKee said at the time.
