Easton's Shuts Down

An update on how the storm is impacting our area.

Easton's Beach will be closed today, but is expected to be reopened sometime Saturday after Hurricane Earl leaves our area.

Newport Fire Cpt. Peter Kirwin said Friday that officers are having a meeting this morning to make sure once again that they're ready should things shift, but right now the storm is thankfully shaping up to be less than they expected.

"We're hoping it says on track, but we're being dilligent," Kirwin said, noting barricades and other equipment are ready to go.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, no roads were reported closed in Newport. Over in Middletown, all roads in low-lying areas on Sachuest Point were closed Friday through Saturday or until flooding subsides. These roads include Sachuest Point Road, Hanging Rock Road, and Third Beach Access Road.

In addition to Easton's Beach, Fort Adams State Beach is also closed today. All Middletown beaches are also closed, with plans to open some on Sunday. Atlantic Beach is expected to remain closed for some days following the storm due to contaminants and high bacterian levels from the storm drain that empties directly into the beach there.
