Four Things to Do This Weekend in Newport

A rundown of some of the events going on from August 6 to 8.

These past few days have been full of action in Newport, and the fun continues tonight as the week is bookended with the second of the big summer fests: the Carefusion Newport Jazz Festival.

It all begins at 8 p.m. Friday with Jamie Cullum, the renowned English jazz-pop singer songwriter, whose music draws influences from the songs of yesterday and the hits of today. He's also pretty easy on the eyes. Eighteen-year-old saxophone phenom Grace Kelley will join him at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Newporters got a taste of her sounds Wednesday when she made an appearance at the BridgeFest MLK Center benefit featuring the James Montgomery Blues Band.

The music continues Saturday at Fort Adams State Park, with Cullum again taking the stage, along with the Chick Corea Freedom Band and many more. Sunday's show is also jam-packed with jazz notables, including Herbie Hancock, Chris Botti, and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, featuring special guest Dave Brubeck.

4) Royal Sounds on Sunday

The International Royal School of Church Music wraps up its week-long course with a final performance Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Over 40 young choristers have spent the week studying in Newport—the first time the course has been held in our city-by-the-sea. The group already marveled locals with their performances at Emmanuel Church earlier this week, so don't miss out on this final chance to hear them. For more details, go here.
