Great Escape: Mmm, Sunday Brunch

Did the kids spend the night at grandma's? Here's a few good reasons to be late picking them up.

Ah, the weekend.

It's a time to relax, unwind, and just as importantly, indulge a little. To me, there's no better way to do that than to start Sunday off with scrambled eggs, home fries, pancakes or whatever else tempts my taste buds on the menus at Newport's many breakfast spots.

Breakfast can feel like such an afterthought during the week. That's why on the weekend it's especially nice to start the day off with something more fun. We're definitely lucky in Newport because so many great options are practically a stone's throw from our homes. Being able to squeeze in a nice walk on the way makes the experience that much more enjoyable (and helps justify the extra calories you're about to take in). For the younger crowd, Sunday morning brunch is the perfect hangover cure. For families, it can be a relatively inexpensive way for everyone to enjoy a meal out together. For moms and dads who have some rare morning alone time, it can be the perfect early date before picking the kids up from a sleepover at their grandparents.

No matter what your motivation, there's definitely plenty of good reasons to eat breakfast out in Newport. My goal is to try every place at least once, but so far I've been sticking to these favorites:

- Definitely try the Portuegese Sailor: chorizo, egg and melted cheese sandwiched between two slices of Portuegese sweet bread. For those with an even bigger appetite, the Huevos Rancheros are delish. Refried beans cost extra, but definitely add them in.

- My personal favorite here is the Eggs Benedict, but they always have plenty of other creative breakfast and lunch dishes that tempt me. Take the window seats if they're available.

- Confession: I love pretty much every old-timey dinner in Rhode Island, so I'd probably frequent Bishop's even if I didn't like the food. Thankfully, it is quite tasty (and inexpensive). The throwback decor is fun, and the servers always make me smile.
