Newport Police Log: Man Runs From Police

The following reports detail the arrests made by the Newport Police Department from Monday, August 9, through the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 10. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Man Arrested Following Fight with Girlfriend, Run from Police

Chancey Eugene Nealy Jr., 26, of 195 Admiral Kalbfus Road Apt. 13E in Newport, was arrested around 11:17 p.m. Monday on charges of violating a no contact order and resisting arrest.

Officers were dispatched to 72 Chapel Terrace around 11:13 p.m. for a report that Nealy and his girlfriend were in a fight. Upon arrival, officers found the two of them, along with a group of other men, sitting out front. Officers say they spoke to the girlfriend and other men, but all were uncooperative and wouldn't say who lived at the address. According to the report, officers had seen Nealy run into the apartment, so when they heard movement on the second floor, they entered the apartment and approached the stairs. At that point officers say they heard a large commotion above and then looked out the window to see Nealy jumping from the second floor onto Chapel Street.

Officers went out and ordered him to stop running, but Nealy turned the corner, causing officers to lose sight of him. Police began searching the area and say they located Nealy hiding behind a large rock wall and a small bush at the corner of Chapel Street and Memorial Boulevard. Officers drew their Tasers and ordered Nealy to show his hands, but he reportedly refused and slowly got into a football tackle stance. Officers then holstered their tasers and forced him to the ground, where he was handcuffed after a brief struggle. At that point, several other officers arrived on the scene and had to instruct a large crowd that had formed to stay back. Nealy reportedly became agitated and began to struggle, making officers have to force him into the cruiser.

En route to the station, officers report that Nealy made several threats. Because his violation of the no contact order was his third domestic violence conviction, he was charged with a felony.

Middletown Man Charged with DUI

Elmehdi Mechtaly, 26, of 661 Jepson Lane Apt. 1 in Middletown, was arrested around 1:43 a.m. Tuesday on a driving under the influence charge.

Officers say they were patrolling Memorial Boulevard near the post office around 1:27 a.m. when they observed a red pickup truck take a right onto Memorial from Spring Street at a high rate of speed. According to the report, after the vehicle went through the intersection of Memorial and Bellevue Avenue, it started weaving back and forth and changing lanes without using a turn signal. As officers approached Mechtaly, they say they noticed he had bloodshot, watery eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath. Mechtaly denied drinking, but after his performance on several field sobriety tests, officers determined they had probable cause to arrest him for DUI.
