Man Arrested After Allegedly Threatening to Kill Bar Patrons

Francisco Antonio Gomez, 21, of 44 East Bowery Street Apt. 1 in Newport, was arrested around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday on charges of disorderly conduct, using offensive words and vandalism.

Police were dispatched to Jimmy's Saloon on Memorial Boulevard around 12:07 a.m. for a report that a disorderly man was in the bar threatening to kill customers. Dispatch reported that he'd last been seen running west on Memorial Boulevard towards the 7-11 convenience store. Police found Gomez, whom they knew from previous police contacts, in the store. They said he fit the description of another suspect who'd reportedly been threatening patrons inside the Red Parrot earlier in the evening.

Officers spoke with the bartender at Jimmy's, who said Gomez was coming in and out and trying to start fights with customers. After repeated attempts to get him to leave, she says Gomez still refused to exit, and at one point threatened to return and kill the bartender and her customers. The woman told police that he'd disrupted several customers, causing them to leave, and that he'd nearly started a fight with some of them.

Police began to handcuff him, but he attempted to pull away. They eventually detained him and got him into the police cruiser, but say that he proceeded to threaten to kill the officers and their families on the ride to the station. He was taken into the station for booking, where the threats continued.

Teen Arrested for Vandalizing Vehicle on the Way to School

A 14-year-old Newport teen was arrested around 9:40 a.m. Monday morning on charges of vandalism and possession of a weapon, other than a firearm.

Police were dispatched to the security office of Newport Grand around 8 a.m., where a security employee told officers that he'd observed two juveniles ride their bikes through the parking lot, then stop by his vehicle and do something to the front tire, causing the front end of his vehicle to fall to the ground. The employee provided police with video of the incident and still photos of the two suspects. Police examined the vehicle and noticed puncture marks on the side of the tire.

Officers responded to Thompson Middle, where Principal Eric Thomas positively identified the teenager seen puncturing the tire and brought him to the office to speak with police. Officers found on the teen two knives — one 3 inches in length, and the other measuring over 3 inches. Police spoke to the teen's grandmother, then brought him to the station for booking. During the interview, the teen initially denied being in the casino parking lot, but after showing him a photo of the incident, he admitted that he was the one pictured and that he had in fact punctured the tire. The teen reportedly couldn't couldn't offer an explanation why he'd committed the act. No charges have been brought against the other teen at this time.

Man Arrested After Fight with Girlfriend

Richard D. Jenkins, 48, of 4 Russell Avenue in Newport, was arrested around 12:55 a.m. Tuesday on charges of domestic simple assault and breaking and entering.

Police were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of Maple Avenue around 12:27 a.m., where they found Jenkins' girlfriend. The woman told police that the two had gotten into a verbal argument earlier in the day and that she later awoke to find him standing over her in bed and yelling at her to come with him. The woman told police Jenkins grabbed her arm several times and tried to pull her out of the residence.

Police then went to Jenkins' home to speak with him. He told officers that he'd entered the residence knowing he was unwelcome and had grabbed the woman trying to get her to leave. Jenkins admitted taking her purse with him so that she'd have to come get it. The woman told police she'd been trying to break up with Jenkins for sometime, but he refused to acknowledge it. He was arrested and taken to the station for booking.

Dissatisfied Hospital Patient Admits to Smashing Vehicle Window After Treatment

David Depue, 50, of no known address, was arrested around 6:25 p.m. Monday on a vandalism charge.

Police were dispatched to the rear parking lot at Newport Hospital around 6:15 p.m., where they spoke to the victim, who was cleaning glass out of her vehicle. The passenger side window had been smashed in, with glass strewn throughout the vehicle, and a rock was found on the driver's seat.

Hospital security drove by and pointed to a man who may have broken the window because he'd just been discharged from the hospital and wasn't happy about his treatment. Police walked over to Depue and asked if he had broken the window, and he immediately said "yeah, yeah I did." Depue told police he was unhappy with his psychiatric treatment, so he broke the vehicle window. He was arrested and taken to the station for booking.
