Newport Man Arrested for Weapon, Pot Possession Under Pell Bridge

Antonio L. Smith Jr, 20, of 120 John Street Apt. 6 in Newport, was arrested around 1:20 a.m. Friday for possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

Police were checking the area under the Pell Bridge around 1:02 a.m. when they observed two men and a woman walking north alongside the railroad tracks toward the rear of Bayside Village apartments. Upon approaching them, an officer immediately noticed that Smith had a pocket knife clipped onto his left front pants pocket. The officer took ahold of it and noticed that the blade was over three inches in length. He asked Smith if he had anything else on him, to which he allegedly replied, "I think I have some weed, but I'm not sure. I'm pretty high." Police searched him and located a plastic bag with marijuana in his front pants pocket.

Police patted down the other two individuals, but found nothing. Smith was transported to the station for booking.

Providence Man Arrested After Giving False Name to Police

Tomas D. Lumpkins, 22, of Providence, was arrested around 4 a.m. Friday on charges of obstruction of an officer and a Second District Court bench warrant.

Police were in the area of Festival Field Apartments when they saw two men, one of whom they recognized as having a no-trespassing order for that location. The man told police he went there to talk to his girlfriend. Police later went to talk to her and found out that she was allowing him to stay there.

The other man, Lumpkins, was observed with an open bottle of vodka under his sweatshirt. When police asked for his name, Lumpkins told them it was Mike Smith and that he'd been previously arrested in Central Falls in 2008. After running a check and finding information on neither claim, they pressed him further until he revealed his real name and the fact that he had a district court bench warrant for failure to appear.

Lumpkins told police he lied about his name because "no one wants to go back to jail." He was arrested and taken to the station for booking.

Warrant Arrest

A 13-year-old Newport girl was arrested around 2:39 p.m. Thursday on a family court capias warrant. Police were dispatched to the area of Maple and Hillside avenues for a report that two women were fighting. Upon arrival, they found the girl's mother and another woman trying to restrain the juvenile. The mother said she'd confronted her daughter about having the warrant, and the situation became heated and the girl attempted to flee. The girl was placed into handcuffs and brought to the station, then later transported to the Rhode Island Training School.

Newport Man Arrested After Fight Over EBT Card

Cortney Adam Hill, 23, of 90 Girard Avenue Apt. 151 in Newport, was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Thursday on charges of domestic simple assault and willful trespass.

Officers were informed about an hour before that a 20-year-old Newport woman had left the apartment after Hill allegedly assaulted her. Police spoke to the victim, who said they'd been dating for four years and had two children together. The woman said Hill walked into her bedroom asking for her EBT benefits card, and that when she questioned why he wanted it, a fight ensued. Police issued a 24-hour pickup for Hill, then later found him at his sister's apartment. He admitted to arguing with the woman, but denied hitting her. He was arrested and brought to the station for booking.

Public Drinking Citation

Steven Bruce Cox, 51, of 19 Chapel Street Apt. 210 in Newport, was cited at 8:35 a.m. Thursday for drinking in public.

Police were on Broadway near the bus stop by Friendship Street when they observed three men there. The officer reported seeing Cox remove a pint size bottle of Vodka from his right rear pants pocket, stand up and take a drink from it. Police seized the alcohol and poured it out, then issued Cox a municipal summons.
