Newport Police Log: Man Charged with Stalking

The following reports detail the arrests made by the Newport Police Department from Wednesday, August 11, through the early morning hours of Thursday, August 12. No arrests were reported on Tuesday, August 10. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Newport Man Charged With Stalking, Trespassing

Paul St. Martin, 48, of 125 Kay Street in Newport, was arrested around midnight Thursday on charges of domestic stalking and domestic willful trespass.

Officers were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. to the home of Martin's ex-girlfriend, who reported that he was on her back porch. The woman told police that she and Martin hadn't been together for months and that she'd filed multiple reports with Middletown and Newport police about him bothering her.

According to the report, officers located St. Martin standing in the dark behind a tree, about 30 feet from the rear of the property.

Local Teen Charged with Stealing Bicycle

A 14-year-old Newport boy was arrested around 11 p.m. Wednesday on a larceny charge, over $500.

Police received a report around 11 p.m. of a stolen bicycle. Around that same time, an officer parked at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and America's Cup Avenue was approached by a pedicab operator, who said another pedicab operator knew where the bike was. Police spoke to the man, who pointed to a group of juveniles congregated nearby, one whom had the bike.

The victim arrived to identify his bike, and police say that when the man questioned the teen about where he got it, he began yelling and said that he'd found it. The teen was released to his mother around 10:45 p.m. and the bike was returned.

Court Violation

A 16-year-old Newport teen was arrested around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday on charges of violating a family court order.

The boy's stepmother reported on July 7 that the teen was missing and was violating his 9 p.m. court-ordered curfew. The boy came into the police station Wednesday afternoon to turn himself in.

Warrant Charges

• Deonne J. Sutton, 25, of Providence, was arrested around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday on a superior court bench warrant. Police were dispatched to Festival Fields Apartments around 1:12 p.m. for a report that a female resident was being threatened by a man. The woman told police she didn't want to press charges. Officers discovered that Sutton had a superior court bench warrant for failure to pay and arrested him with the charge.
• Eric D. Lareau, 23, of New Bedford, MA, was arrested around 2:25 a.m. Wednesday for a Sixth District bench warrant. An officer discovered the warrant after pulling Lareau over for pulling out of the 7-Eleven on Broadway without his lights on.
